Died, on July 5, near Tabo, Mrs. Mary A. Pool, in the 70th year of her age. A lovable old lady gone to her last rest. A faithful servant gone to her reward.

Mary Ann Matthews was born in 1831 in Co. Antrim, Ireland and immigrated thru Liverpool, England aboard a ship called the Southerner, which arrived in New York City on Aug. 16, 1842.

She is listed on the ship's manifest with her parents, James and Nancy (Caulfield) Matthews, 5 Northern Ireland native siblings, two uncles, David and Andrew Matthews, one aunt, Rose (Matthews) Pool and Rose's 6 Northern Ireland native sons.

There's a Joseph or James Matthews (age 50), who is listed on the ship's manifest with the Matthews & Pool family members but we don't know how he was related.

Mary Ann Matthews was married on April 11, 1853 in Lafayette Co., Missouri to her first cousin, Samuel C. Pool, son of William and Rose (Matthews) Pool. They are buried together at the McGinness Cemetery in Lafayette Co., MO. along with her parents, James and Nancy (Caulfield) Matthews and one of her sisters, Eliza L. (Matthews) McGinness.
