Jacob Andrew Johnson was the son of Calvin Gustus and Susan E. Cline Johnson, the eldest of 16 children. He was born in Lamar County Alabama and lived there most of his life.

He first married Laura Emma Richards, with whom he had four children; Iva May, Plato Richards, Emma Mildred, and Braxton. After Emma's death in 1909, he married Mona Waldrep. Together they had six children; Dessie Sue, Andrew Waldrep, Dorothy Nell, Joe Aldine, Mona Jean, and William Edwin.

He was instrumental in the founding of the Red Bay, Hamilton, and especially the Vernon Alabama Church of Christ.

He was a teacher at West Alabama Agricultural School in Hamilton Alabama, Cherokee County High School in Centre Alabama, a teacher and the principal at Lamar County High School in Vernon Alabama, a teacher at Caldonia Mississippi, and a teacher at the Trades Training Institute of Mississippi State College at Prairie Mississippi in 1951 & 1952, where he taught Algebra, Geometry and Business Law, mainly to veterans under the G.I. Bill.

He also farmed on a small scale to support his family.
