Jesse V. Clardy, 80, of Warrensburg, passed away Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009 at the Western Missouri Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 15, 1929 in Olney, Texas, the son of Jesse Ellis and Tina Faye (Pringle) Clardy. He graduated from high school in Levelland, Texas and later served in the U.S. Army in Korea and Germany.

He was united in marriage to Betty Sue (Powell) Cogburn on Aug. 6, 1964 in Fayetteville, Ark.

Jesse received his bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees at Texas A & I and his doctorate in Russian history at the University of Michigan.

He was a history professor at the University of Missouri for 45 years. He published several books and articles on Russian history and also had six sabbaticals in Russia. He retired from teaching in 1999.

He loved tennis, gardening, travel, foreign languages, and dominoes, especially 42. He also enjoyed sports and classical music.

Survivors include his wife, Betty of the home; two daughters: Kathy Prenger and her husband, Norm of Atco, N.J. and Nita Cogburn of Overland Park, Kan.; three grandchildren, John Fischer of Seattle, Wash.; Jamie Patterson and her husband, Mike, of Tuscumbia; and Marina Cogburn, of Overland Park; two sisters: Gloria Heatherington of Louisville, Ky. and Donna Luginbyhl and her husband, Waymond of Mill Creek, Okla.; a brother, Dick Clardy and his wife, Glenda of Lubbock, Texas; and several nieces and nephews, including Eric Powell of Mt. Ida, Ark., who was like a son to him.

Jesse was preceded in death by both parents and a sister, Billie Faye.

Following cremation, there will be a Celebration of Life Service in Lubbock, Texas later this summer.

Williams Funeral Chapel in Warrensburg is in charge of the arrangements.
