MR. MATTINGLY DIES SUDDENLY - FARMER COLLAPSED WHILE FEEDING HOGS SUNDAY MORNING AND DIED IN ARMS OF SON; BURIAL AT ROCKBRIDGE MONDAY - Death came suddenly at 7 o'clock Sunday morning to Mr. George Mattingly, age fifty-seven years, at his home four miles north of this city. He and three sons were feeding hogs when Mr. Mattingly was stricken with a heart attack and collapsed, falling into the arms of his son. He breathed only twice after being stricken. Mr. Mattingly suffered a serious attack of influenza about five months ago, which weakened his heart, and he had since been under treatment, but was thought to be much improved. In fact, he remarked a short time before he was stricken, that he was feeling unusually well that morning and his sudden death came as a shock to his family and many friends. Surviving Mr. Mattingly are his widow, Mrs. Ada Chesser Mattingly; six daughters, Mrs. Irvin Hardin, Mrs. Chester Lewis, Misses Mary, Martha, Ethel and Ellarose Mattingly, and six sons, Hughey, Oscar, Russell, Estill, Clayton and J. W. Mattingly. He also leaves one brother, Dan Mattingly, and two sisters, Mrs. Mansfield Crowe and Mrs. James Beavers. Funeral services for Mr. Mattingly were held at the Rock Bridge Baptist Church at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. R. L. Gray, and burial was in the church cemetery there. Buried, 5-06-1929, in Rock Bridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Washington Co., Ky. (Published in The Springfield Sun, Thursday, May 9, 1929)
Note - Listed as age 1 in the 1870 Washington Co. Ky. census & as age 12 in the 1880 Washington Co. Ky. census, so birth year of 1872 on his tombstone appears to be incorrect.
