Douglas was the son of Charles Louis and Viola Hixie (Franklin) Slover. As an infant he lived with his grandparents, Anderson and Blanche Franklin. The entire family moved from Oklahoma to southern California. Douglas spent his teen years in Los Angeles County.

He married Helen Gunther and was father to two girls, Nancy and Susan.

He died at the age of 34 years. Besides his wife and daughters, he was survived by his half-brother, Ernie Thom. His cousin Bill Allred's son was born on the first anniversary of his death and named for him. Bill and Douglas had both been raised by their grandparents together. Bill felt like they were more brothers than cousins.

Note: His death record lists his mother's maiden name as Beaupre - that was her married name at the time of his death.
