Sophia Anna Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob and Anna Eck Pauly was born in Memphis, Tenn., on April 26, 1874. At the age of one she moved with her parents to Kansas. She was united in marriage to V.A. Smith at Tipton, Kansas on Nov. 8, 1893, to this union 3 daughters and on 2 sons were born. Mrs. Smith was a faithful member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church where she served on cemetery association. She was Cawker City's first Gold Star Mother and an active member of American Legion Aux. Sophia loved flowers and always a promoter of Cawker City. Her passing came at the Beloit Hospital on August 28, 1960, at the age of 86 years, 4 months and 2 days. Survivors include her three daughters; Mrs. Joe Mildrexler, Miss Mary Smith of Cawker City; Mrs. Charles Munsey of Beloit; one son Raymond Smith of Junction City; one brother, Mr. Pete Pauly of Beloit; 1 sister Mrs. John Smith, Cawker City; nine grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. Mr. Smith and one son preceded her in death. Services were held Tuesday, August 20, 1960 at 9:00 a.m., in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Cawker City. Rev. Paul
Meitl officiated. Casket bearers were: H.H. Shearer, Matt Thille, Henry Koster, Harold Garrett, Jack Koster and John Tichy. Interment was in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Cawker City. Miller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
