NILES, Mich. -- George Allen Chew, 79, of Niles, died at 9 a.m. Monday (Aug. 15, 2005) at home after an illness.
He was born June 3, 1926, in South Bend to Wiley R. and Dora B. (Lamb) Chew.
On June 20, 1951, he married Norma J. Helmlinger. She preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 1998.
Surviving are two sons, George A. Chew Jr. of Muskegon and Troy A. Chew of Traverse City; four daughters, Charlene Chew of Niles, Donna Curtis of Bonita Springs, Fla., Linda (Jeff) Eggeman of Muskegon and Jeannie (Van) Smith of Freeport, Maine; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Rose Kantz of Traverse City and Mary Carpenter of Niles.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Wiley Chew, Glenn Chew, John Chew, Don Chew and the Rev. Charles Chew; and a sister, Fern Dunfee.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. (Michigan time) Friday and for one hour before the 1 p.m. Saturday service, all at Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, 26863 W. Main St., Edwardsburg. The Rev. Clearence Dycus will officiate. Burial will be in Edwardsburg Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be by Edwardsburg American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and U.S. Army from Fort Knox, Ky.
Mr. Chew lived in the area until 1977. He then moved to Traverse City and remained there until 2001, when he moved back to the area. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars of Traverse City and was a U.S. Army veteran.
