Anchorage resident EMITT L. SOLDIN, 78, died Nov. 11, 2002, at Providence Extended Care Center. A memorial service was held at the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum.

Mr. Soldin was born Oct. 14, 1924, in Skagway, where he graduated from high school. He had been a pilot and airframe and power plant mechanic for Alaska Coastal Airlines in Juneau, then a pilot mechanic for the Fish and Wildlife Service in Juneau. He flew a Grumman Goose on stream surveys, did enforcement patrols, freight and equipment hauling, and transportation of personnel and search missions. He later flew for the Bureau of Land Management. He also specialized in piloting and maintaining the Grumman Goose aircraft use. Mr. Soldin then worked for Shaw Flight Service, flying and maintaining flight operations for an oilfield contract at King Salmon. After the family lost their home in the 1964 earthquake, he worked for Sky Van Airways of Seattle, and in 1965, as a co-pilot in a C-46. In 1965, he returned to Alaska. He worked for the Department of Fish and Game and flew transplanted wildlife in rural areas. Mr. Soldin later worked for the Federal Aviation Administration as a flight inspection pilot and later as an airspace flight inspection pilot. He retired from the FAA in 1978. Mr. Soldin had volunteered as a search pilot and coordinator for the Civil Air Patrol. He was a member of Pioneers of Alaska; longtime member of OX5 Aviation Pioneers; a member of various aircraft associations; and life member of the Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his daughter, Lori Mitchell of Anchorage; sons, Kenneth Soldin of Anchorage and Rick Soldin of Tennessee; sisters, Irene Hendrickson and Inez Knorr of Skagway and Tooky Harlow of Washington state; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His family said: ''Emitt was a pioneer aviator in Alaska who befriended anyone with an interest in aircraft or flying. As a family, we grew up examining Alaska from the air. Our home was always open to new and old friends who would fly in from faraway places, always welcomed by Emitt, whose list of friends and experiences offered us a rich and full life.'' In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum, 4721 Aircraft Drive, Anchorage 99502.
