Frederick Starnes was the eldest son of Capt. John Starnes (c.1745-1780s), a Soldier of the Revolution, and his wife Margaret Speck. He was born circa 1771 in either Virginia or Mecklenburg Co., NC (the section that later became Union Co.) and died in Union County sometime in the 1850s.

Frederick married Magdalene Cline/Klein, a daughter of Michael Cline/Klein in Cabarrus County, NC, thier marriage bond dated 3 July 1794. (Bondsmen Joseph Starnes & Herman Myer, witness John Simanier).

Frederick & Magdalene had seven children:

1. John Starnes (c.1795-1870s) m. Sarah "Sallie" Richardson (c. 1790, dau. of Edward Richardson, Sr. & Catherine), Children. Elizabeth (c. 1809, m. Hugh Coffee Nisbitt, m. March 1836), Sarah (c. 1817, never married?), Mary "Polly" Starnes (c. 1819, m. John Marshall Swann), Thomas (1821-1891, m. Elizabeth Richardson, d/o William Philip Richardson & Winifred Reeves), William Philip Starnes (c. 1826-25 Aug. 1862, CSA, d. Petersburg Va, m. Lemira/Linda, perhaps Griffin?), Martha C.
