Enlisting in March 1940, she was appointed to Q.A.I.M.N.S.R. [Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve] on 30 May 1941; shortly later she proceeded to Malta, where she served throughout the siege, receiving an injury from an enemy shell. She was later posted to serve in the Middle East; Sister Balfour was on her way back to England at the time of her death.
An S.R.N. [State Registered Nurse], she was the daughter of Archibald Craig Balfour, L.R.C.S. [Licence of the Royal College of Surgeons of England], L.R.C.P. [Licence of the Royal College of Physicians of London], and Margaret Ellen Balfour of Aviemore, Inverness-shire, Scotland.
There is a grave monument to commemorate Nursing Sister Balfour in her hometown in the Rothimurchus Episcopal St. John's Churchyard.
