Born Richard William Gnatkowski to parents of German and Polish heritage, He changed his name to Carlisle when he became an adult. After joining the Army Air Corps he was trained as a pilot and served as a flying instructor in Alexandria Louisiana before being sent overseas.

Carlisle was the pilot of B-25 bomber #2853 with the 9th Air Force, 12th Bombardment Group, 81st Bombardment Squadron. They were part of a nine plane group that took off from Deversoir air drome in Egypt on a nightime mission to bomb enemy ships in the harbor of Tobruk Libya. Carlisle's plane was seen to go down over the target area, presumably hit by anti-aircraft fire. None of the crew survived, and their bodies were not recovered, so they are listed on the Wall of the Missing.

He received the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Mrs Elsie Gnatt received word today that her son, Richard William Carlisle has been missing in action since August 23 in the African Middle East theater of war.
Captain Carlisle attended the University of Arizona and majored in mechanical engineering. He attended Tucson senior high school also. Captain Carlisle received his flight training at Randolph and Kelly air fields and was a member of the Army air corps.
