Roy enlisted as a Private in the United States Army on July 16, 1942 and was initially inducted at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.
Due to his education, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Infantry and was assigned to the 38nd Infantry Regiment (Rock of the Marne), 2nd Infantry Division.
He was killed in action and is buried in Belgium, Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial; Block D, Row 10, Grave 55.
He was awarded the Purple Heart for his ultimate sacrifice to his Country.
