Roy was the son of Karl Charles Mode, b. 1888 MN., d. 1911 Bismarck, ND and Fannie Emilie Hansen, b. 1891 in Førslev, Haslev, Soro, Vestsjalland, Denmark, d. 1965 Bismarck, ND.

In 1941, Roy is recorded as being a Sophomore at the State Teachers College; Valley City, North Dakota. This later became Valley City State University.

Roy enlisted as a Private in the United States Army on July 16, 1942 and was initially inducted at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.

Due to his education, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Infantry and was assigned to the 38nd Infantry Regiment (Rock of the Marne), 2nd Infantry Division.

He was killed in action and is buried in Belgium, Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial; Block D, Row 10, Grave 55.

He was awarded the Purple Heart for his ultimate sacrifice to his Country.
