On December 5, 1943 the 389th BG set out against Cognac, France. Poor weather forced the group to bomb St. Nazaire instead. Over the secondary target,THE OKLAHOMAN was hit by flak and came apart. One man, Lt. Harley Mason of the 566th BS, survived became POW.
Lt Nolan was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a Ploesti raider having participated in "Operation Tidal Wave" August 1 1943. One of the most daring raids of WW2. Flying with Pilot Lt. Westerbeke's crew, coming in at tree top level the Sky Scorpions destroy the Steaua Romana oil refinery. The refinery does not produce oil for six months.
