Mary King Patterson, 90, dies in New York

Deceased Name: Mrs. Mary King Patterson

NEW YORK -- Mrs. Mary King Patterson, former director of Tribune Company and widow of Capt. Joseph Medill Patterson, the late publisher of the New York Daily News, died Saturday in her home in Riverdale, a section of the Bronx, New York City.

Mrs. Patterson, who turned 90 Dec. 3, began her distinguished career in journalism in 1907 with The Chicago Tribune.

She held many top positions with The Tribune, the New York Daily News, and affiliated companies until her retirement in 1969 as women's editor of The News, Tribune Company director, and Patterson trustee of the McCormick-Patterson trust.

The News said upon her death, which followed a long illness, that no one with the possible exception of her late husband left a more indelible mark on that newspaper than Mrs. Patterson.

MASS FOR Mrs. Patterson will be said at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, New York City. Plans call for Mrs. Patterson to be buried Wednesday near her husband in Arlington National Cemetery.

Mrs. Patterson was born in Chicago in 1885, the daughter of Mary McMahon and Dr. William King. She attended Sacred Heart School, St. Mary's High School, and business college in Chicago.

In 1907 she became assistant secretary to the late Medill McCormick, then publisher of The Tribune. Among her duties was reading manuscripts for the newspaper's Sunday editor and selecting material for the Bright Sayings feature.

She later became assistant Sunday editor and then Sunday editor of The Tribune.

She moved to New York City to become women's editor of Liberty Magazine when Tribune Company started the publication in 1924. She also served as fiction editor of the Chicago Tribune-New York News Syndicate.

SHE BECAME women's editor of The News when Liberty Magazine was sold in 1931.

Mrs. Patterson originted the idea in 1935 of the Harvest Moon Ball, a famous dancing contest and entertainment held annually until last year in Madison Square Garden.

She and the late Capt. Patterson were married in 1938.

Capt. Patterson and his cousin, Col. Robert R. McCormick, late publisher of The Tribune, founded The News in 1919. At the time of his death in 1946, Patterson was publisher of The News and president of the News Syndicate Co., Inc., a subsidiary of Tribune Company, which publishes The News.

Mrs. Patterson is survived by her son, James J., assistant managing editor of The News and a Tribune Company director, and her sister, Loretta King, former News movie critic who wrote under the name "Kate Cameron."

Mrs. Patterson also had been a director of Chicago Tribune Corp.; News Syndicate Co., Inc.; Chicago Tribune-New York News Syndicate, Inc.; WPIX, Inc.; and the News Welfare Association, Inc.
