Warner L. "Warnie" Hammond, 87, of Vevay, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, at King's Daughters' Hospital.

He was born Feb. 27, 1923, in Shelby County, Ky., the son of Walter L. and Lula Mae Mallory Hammond. He had lived in Switzerland County since the age of 7, and had made many friends in the Moorefield community. He was a member of Beech Ridge Baptist Church in Shelby County, Ky. He enjoyed working with local farmers helping with tobacco and doing odd jobs. He relied on the services of home health, and for the past five years had a family with his caretakers. He had never traveled much outside his community, and recently enjoyed traveling with his adopted family to Disney World, Daytona Beach, Fla., and Cancun, Mexico.

He is survived by two caretakers, Sherrie Turner Romans and Melissa Patrick, both of Vevay; two sisters, Edna M. Whisman and Edith Rose Lee both of Frankfort, Ky.; one brother, Elbert Hammond of Louisville, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; his mother, Lula Mae Mallory Hammond Lee; and one brother, Ernest Hammond.

The funeral was at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial was in Vevay Cemetery.
