Alver B. "Al" Powell, 87, died Friday in Gulfport.

The funeral was held Monday at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Riemann Funeral Home of Gulfport. Interment was in Southern Memorial Park, Biloxi.

Mr. Powell, a retired motel owner, was a native of Kite and had been a Gulfport resident since 1947. He was the original owner of Sea Gull Motel, which he built in 1947, and managed from 1949 to 1977.

A member of the Gulfport Men's Camellia Club, he was known as a camellia ambassador of the Gulf Coast. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Gulfport, the Gulfport Rotary Club, and was a Paul Harris Fellow.

Survivors are a son, Christopher W. Powell of Gulfport; two sisters, Mrs. Lincie Dee Lawson of Adrian and Mrs. Georgia Dell Harrison of Kite; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Riemann Funeral Home of Gulfport was in charge of arrangements.
