James at the age of 18 volunteered for service in the Confederate Army. His early service record is incomplete. It is known that he was later assigned to the 45th Virginian Battalion and was selected to be in a group of twelve sharpshooters.
He was in the Battle of Cedar Creek that took place in Virginia. He was shot in the right leg just above the knee. When he was wounded he dropped his gun, grabbed his shattered leg and tried to walk away. His weight on the badly shattered bone sent it tearing through muscles, tendons and skin, damaging it so badly, that when the wounded were gathered up later in the day he was placed in a barn with about 100 doubtful cases. The next morning he was the only survivor. Some brave, kind-hearted women stole him out of the barn and moved him to a safer place. He was later taken prisoner and sent to a Federal Hospital in Baltimore, Md., where the leg was amputated. He remained a Federal Prisoner until approximately 6 months after the Civil War.
He was married to Hannah Acord in 1868 and became the father of 12 children, 10 of whom reached adulthood. His descendants have fond memories of him and his may experiences that he related to them while he lived.
