Elmer "Spike" Conzett was a 32 year old victim of the Winecoff Hotel fire in Atlanta, Georgia on December 7, 1946. He was from Dubuque, Iowa and stayed in room 1230. He was a Navy lieutenant commander and a war hero. He sank a Japanese destroyer at the battle of Guadalcanal as a dive-bomber. He was making a one-night stopover in Atlanta and stayed at the Winecoff Hotel while ferrying Navy planes from Norfolk, Virginia to Long Beach, California.
