Simon Hershberger, 90, of 523A Gibbons Road, Bird-in-Hand, went home to be with the Lord on December 10, 2010. He was born near Farmerstown, Ohio, on September 23, 1920, son of the late Daniel and Katieann Beachy Hershberger. He had lived in Bird-in-Hand for the past twelve summers.

Simon married Esta Miller in Kalispell, MT, during his years of Civilian Public Service in Glacier National Park. They were married 62 years before Esta passed away in March of 2008.

Simon co-owned Balco Machine Company in Farmerstown for 21 years and serviced many of the farmers. He had been a member of the Ohio Farm Bureau, held a lifetime membership in the Mennonite Information Center in Berlin, OH, and was a 31-gallon blood donor. A self-taught man, he loved to read, discuss politics, listen to classical and bluegrass music, clear the meadows and fence rows of weeds, and hike in Montana and Arizona.

A faithful member of Walnut Creek (OH) Mennonite Church, he served as elder, Sunday school and Vacation Bible school superintendent, and Sunday school teacher. He was also an associate member of Stumptown Mennonite Church in Bird-in-Hand and Sunnyslope Mennonite Church in Phoenix, AZ, where he and his wife spent 22 winters. In 1975 Simon and Esta served in Buckeye, AZ, in voluntary service and Simon had also volunteered at Ten Thousand Villages, Ephrata, and Glencroft Thrift Shop in AZ.

Surviving are two daughters Joanne, wife of Steve Yoder, Glendale, AZ, and Myrna, wife of John Smucker, Bird-in-Hand; six grandchildren Alex and Alicia Yoder and Hans, Anny, Heidi, and Carrie Smucker; two brothers, Henry (husband of Ruth) and Daniel all of Sugarcreek, Ohio; three sisters-in-law, Katieann Hershberger of Millersburg, OH, Ellen Hershberger of Dublin, OH, and Fannie Hershberger of Dover, OH; one brother-in-law, Moses Kaufman of Sugarcreek, OH and 22 nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community for the exceptional care they gave Simon during the last months of his life. Their compassion and friendship were a great comfort and delight to him.
