Mary M. Salyer, 81, of Raceland, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. Mrs. Salyer was born Aug. 29, 1926, a daughter of the late James R. and Josaphine Mae Adams Cumpton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Edward Salyer, Jr., and two brothers, Clifford Cumpton and Troy Cumpton. Mrs. Salyers was an accountant and bookkeeper with C&O Railroad, the Russell YMCA and Fitness World. She was a member of Wurtland Church of God. She was a member of Chapter 144, Order of Eastern Star, president of the Worthington Younger Woman's Club, secretary and treasurer of the Whirl-A-Ways Square Dance Club, a Kentucky colonel and a notary public. She delivered Meals on Wheels and was the administrator of Adopt-A-Highway. She was a member of the Greenup County Lioness Club, originated and developed the Worthington City Park, including bringing in the caboose, and was a manager and supervisor at Flatwoods, Ironton and South Point city pools.
Survivors include a son, Corky Salyer of Raceland; two brothers, Harold (Avonelle) Sloan of Wurtland and John J. (Fran) Cumpton of Sparks, Neb.; and a sister-in-law, Elsie Cumpton of Worthington. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods by Pastor Henry Montgomery. Burial will be in Caroline Cemetery in Raceland. friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
