Mark was born to this Earth on March 23, 1953, in East St. Louis, Ill., as the oldest son to Gene and Loretta Middleton who now reside in Lakeland, Fla. He spent his growing up years in Fort Thomas, Ky., and then back in Illinois, where he graduated from high school as a Belleville West Maroon. Mark went on to play football and baseball at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., where he enjoyed the company of his Sigma Nu brothers - many times to the distress of the campus security and administration. Having been a catcher since childhood, baseball was Mark's first love as an athlete. With his high school years spent in the greater St. Louis area, he became, and was until the end, a die-hard Cardinals fan.

After college, Mark worked for United Airlines for several years, moving around the Midwest, until in 1982, he and two friends started a computer company in Granger. In October of that year, he made a sales call to the accounting firm in Rochester that was owned by the former Patty Carr. Mark and Patty, always affectionately referred to by Mark as "Babe," like to say they met through computer dating - Mark was selling and Patty was buying. On June 18, 1983, Mark and Patty were married, and they brought together Patty's two young daughters, Kristen, 6, and Andrea, months old at the time, and Mark's two young sons, Nick, 4, and Luke, 2-years-old at the time. And that's the way they all became the Middleton bunch.

Mark adored his children and grandchildren. He and Patty traveled far and wide while their kids were growing up to watch their sporting events, and other school programs. Mark was always the loudest cheerleader in the stands, if he was not helping out as a coach. Kristen married Andy Dalton in 1998. They are the parents of Madelyn and Abby, 11 and 8, in Carmel. The traveling continued with dance and piano recitals, swim meets and soccer matches for the girls, whether they lived in Madison, Wis., or back in Indiana. Mark loved nothing more than when Maddie and Abby came to visit at the lake. Their stays included boating, fishing, tubing, swimming, corn hole, sparklers and late night outdoor movies shown on the lake side of the condos. These outings typically included a gaggle of other kids from the condos who were here for the summer months.

Nick married Michelle Cederholm in 2004. They are the parents of Blake and Paige, 2 1/2 and 11 months, and have recently moved to Camas, Wash., from Anchorage, Alaska. Although there were only a few visits with these younger grandkids, Mark's love for them was deep. His eyes always lit up, when Michelle sent new photos. Luke is living in San Diego and Andrea is moving there soon from her current residence in New York City, as she has recently become engaged to Luke Stocking, who also lives in San Diego. Mark will have a strong spiritual presence at the weddings of each of his younger children, and the family will surely keep his memory alive for all future grandchildren.

In addition to his own kids and grandkids, Mark always enjoyed the company of his Mom and Dad, Gene and Loretta, as well as his sister Linda and her husband (and Mark's best friend) Kevin Connor. They all live in Florida along with Kevin and Linda's four kids and grandkids, so there were many trips down there every year. Mark's two younger brothers Matt and Rick, their wives Jenny and Stephanie along with a niece and lots of nephews live in the greater Detroit area. Mark loved to play golf with these guys and had just played three days of 36 holes a day in early August. Mark showed no less love to Patty's folks, Jim and Grace Carr when they were alive, and her siblings, always looking forward to big family get-togethers. Mark's first wife, Rachel Thompson, lives in South Bend, where she will continue to be a wonderful mother and grandmother.

Mark was a kid magnet. At gatherings where there were children, you would typically find him hanging out more with them than the other adults present. When Patty met kids in town by herself, they always asked the question, "Where or how is Mark?" He and Patty started helping out with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle at Rochester High School in the late '90s, because they both loved kids, and felt this organization to be a fun way to introduce high schoolers to Jesus. Many meaningful, life-long relationships developed from this labor of love.

Mark was the head of the Fulton County Republican Party for eight years in the '90s and relished lively political discussions. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club several years ago as well as a founding member of the local Toastmasters group. Mark was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church where he opened the service with announcements and prayer for many years and sang in the choir for the past few years. Mark had fun doing all of these things, his motto being "If it can't be fun, it's not worth doing." In most cases, he simply made the work fun.

Mark and Patty built successful Amway and Univera businesses, getting started in Relationship Marketing in the late '80s. Mark was a great teacher and team member, traveling many, many miles to lend a hand to other team members. Everywhere he went, he left a lasting impression with his contagious laugh and fun-loving attitude. In the past couple of years, Mark also oversaw the independent sales reps for Rochester Rotational Molding Inc. in Rochester, owned by the Wade family. Mark loved making sales calls, whether over the phone or in person. He left a trail of friends all across the country.
