Ernest was born in Mecklenburg, Schwerin, Germany to Joachim Heinrich Christian Cordes and Friederike Charlotte Dorothea Schroeder Cordes. He was the youngest of eight children.

At one time, his brother Chris, wife Anna, and their children were also living in Cottonwood County, Minnesota. In 1905 Ernest was working for a wealthy man named Henry Traufether. **See the newspaper article for the sad story.

On the WWI draft record, Ernest was 42 years old and working for J C Kockly in Dundee, Minnesota as a laborer, but a note at the end of the record says "real occupation photographer". His brother Christ Cords was listed as his closest contact. Christ and his family were living in Ainsworth, Nebraska by that time.

By the 1930 Census Ernest was still single, living in Graham Lake Township, Minnesota and listed his occupation as photography/studio. He owned his home which was worth "$1000", and he had a radio. He came to the United States in 1885 according to the census. Ernest never married.

Upon Ernest's demise, his niece Minnie Cords Schrieber and her husband, John, took care of his final estate. Minnie was Chris Cords' fourth-born child.

I believe these pictures are Ernest, as they are taken in Minnesota. I wish I knew more about Ernest, but there isn't anyone left with information that far back. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
