Paul K. Ranum, age 81, of Janesville, Wisconsin died unexpectedly Monday, February 14, 2011, at Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center, as a result of an earlier fall. He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on April 6, 1929, the legal son of William Sverre and Viola Gladys (nee Jennings) Ranum. His biological father was unknown during his lifetime. A few years after his death, his children identified their grandfather through DNA tests. His name was Concepcion "Jack" Flores Marmolejo. Through DNA they learned of another of Concepcion's sons, Paul's half-brother, and first cousins.

In the 1940's Paul served in the Merchant Marines. In 1954 he married Leona "Lea" E. Ueland. Together they had five children. They moved to Janesville in November of 1957 from Oregon. In 1958, Lea and Paul founded L & P Tree Service with a pick-up truck and a chain saw.

Leona and Paul divorced in 1980. In 1983, he married Alice Vaade. She preceded him in death in 1997. He married Donna Hendrickson Schindler in November, 2000.

In 1993, Paul turned over control of L & P Tree Service to his two youngest sons, but it took a few years for him to quit coming to work. After his final retirement, Paul served as a volunteer, delivering Meals on Wheels, as well as driving shut-ins for Rock County. He loved his family, and his dogs, Bonnie and Clyde.

At the time of his passing, Paul was survived by his wife, Donna Hendrickson Schindler; four children: Paula (John) Ranum Schutt, Mark Trevor (husband Craig Bodoh) Ranum, Christopher (Cindy) Ranum and Curtis Ranum; 2 step-children: Gary (Patsy) Ranum and Debra (Thomas) Maher; 7 grandchildren, Joshua, Tyshanna, Timothy, Jonathan, Nicole, Michael, and Marcus, and 5 step-grandchildren: Jesse, Yuri, Thomas, James, and Daniel. He also had four great-grandchildren, Samara, Jagger, Leanna, and Avayeh, plus two great-grandchildren who will be arriving soon, Ariana and William. He is also survived by three brothers, Dan, Jim, and Leo Dadey, and three sisters, Rose Ellen, Elizabeth, and Sarah, all in Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Joseph Dadey, two former spouses, Leona and Alice, and his son Timothy in 1960.

A visitation was held on Friday from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME. A Funeral Services was held at the same location at 10 AM on Saturday, February 19, 2011 with Pastor Craig Thomas officiating. Internment was in Oak Hill Cemetery.
