This is the grave site of our great great great (I think) grandmother. Cared for by cousins, Dallas and Lawrence Cook of Ashcamp, KY. Here is their story: Mary Polly was a Cherokee Indian as I have been told. The Cherokees' primary living area were south of here mostly in what is now Virgina, North Carolina & Tennessee. They hunted here in Kentucky as game was abundant, but the Shawnees, who lived mostly in Ohio, also liked to hunt in Kentucky. And as these two tribes were fierce enemies when they met up it was usually a battle royal. She married Isaac Moore & gave birth to 11 children & died relatively young. When Mary Polly passed on some of her Cherokee family came to help send her on her way. They carved stones & put around her grave so the Shawnees would not desecrate her remains. The stone blocks are still there & they are two blocks high. After Mary Polly's death, Isaac married again to a Mullins woman. At least one son was born to this union & his granddaughter lives at Shelby Gap. Isaac's son, Moses Moore, wife & his mother are buried near Shelby Gap. Isaac was shot & killed near Osborne Gap, Virginia in 1862 & is buried at Skeetrock, Virginia. I would say that his death was because of the Civil War. Heartfelt thanks to my cousins, Dallas & Lawrence for their great love & continued devotion to our ancestors.
