John was born to John and Elsa Nelson, who lived on 40 acres along Rock River, near Stillman Valley, Illinois. He joined the Navy in 1940, at age seventeen, and served on the ship U.S.S. Oklahoma and survived when it was sunk in Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7, 1941. He wed Fern Luella Wymore and had five children:
