He was the Speaker of the House of Burgesses and Treasurer of the Colony of Virginia. But he died unexpectedly and it became apparent that he, as Treasurer, had lent public funds to a number of his personal friends, family and allies. These funds were in the form of paper notes which were supposed to have been destroyed when they came back into the Treasury. Many of the people to whom he had lent the funds, such as William Byrd of Westover and Bernard Moore of Chelsea, his brother-in-law, were financially embarrassed by the scandal.

He was buried in the garden at his home, Pleasant Hill, which was on the upper bank of the Mattaponi River in King and Queen County, VA and across the river from Chelsea, the home of Bernard Moore. The mansion house of the plantation no longer exists and the exact location of his grave is not known.

He was married three times first to Mary Storey on 08 Nov., 1723, second to Lucy Moore ca. 1740 and third to Susan Chiswell in Dec., 1759. It is known that he had at least three children, two daughters and a son, but very little is know about his children.

Census taker (46879037) contribution:
John Robinson's son, John Robinson, Jr., of Green Branch, Middlesex County, VA married Deborah Dunlap in 1784. Deborah was the daughter of Rev. William Dunlap of Stratton Major and Deborah Crocker Dunlap, a niece of Deborah Read Franklin, Mrs. Benjamin Franklin.
