Hugh Garrison Lambert was born in Earlville, IL, in 1889. He was the third-born child and only son of Leland Fenner and Mae Cavan Lambert. His parents separated when he was about 12-13 years old. His mother took the girls and Hugh stayed with his father (and step-mother).

He spoke very little about his early years with his family, but we know that he left home in his early teen years, lived with his uncle Russel for awhile, and later moved to Chicago where he showed up in the 1910 census. By the date of the 1915 ND census, he was in Lisbon, ND, living with the L.M. Blanchard family, next door to the Julius Murray family - where his future bride lived.

Hugh served in the U.S. Army during WW I and was serving overseas when his father Leland died in 1918. Hugh was unable to return for his father's funeral.

Hugh married Esther Estelle "Etta" Murray on June 24, 1919, in Lisbon, ND, shortly after returning from the service. Both were in their early 30's when they wed. Hugh and Etta had four children in quick succession and reared them in the Lisbon area. Their oldest, Calvin, tragically died in an automobile accident in 1934 at the age of 14. Hugh was never quite the same after Calvin's death.

Hugh and Etta sent their three daughters to college. Each graduated with a teaching certificate and taught in schools after graduation.

Hugh worked as a farmer, butcher and finally as a janitor at the US Post Office where he retired. He and Etta were avid gardeners, often winning ribbons at the county fair for their produce. Hugh was a hunter and fisher.

Hugh used "LeRoy" as his middle name most of his adult life and his daughters didn't realize his real middle name was Garrison until after his death. Around town (Lisbon), he went by his nickname "Casey."

Hugh died at 78 on January 20, 1967, while hospitalized in Fargo, ND, from complications related to his emphysema. He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon, ND, next to his son Calvin. Etta would join them, some 18 years later.
