He was the son of George Beale and Mary Dixon Beale.
On June 2, 1829 as Robert Beale, he married Elizabeth Jane Forbes at Washington, District of Columbia.
They were the parents of seven children.

He served as Sergeant-At-Arms of the United States Senate and warden of the jail during part of Lincoln's administration. He was a lawyer and member of the bar, but never practiced much.
