Dorothy Norma Jacobs, of Richmond, Virginia, died peacefully Sunday, a few weeks shy of her 98th birthday, surrounded by her family. The last of five children of Samuel and Celia Barg Jacobs, she was born in 1913 in the family home in Concord, Massachusetts. Her parents, and two brothers and two sisters predeceased her. Following graduation from Concord High School in 1930, she studied at the Massachusetts School of Art (now the Massachusetts College of Art and Design) and was awarded a B.S. in Education in 1934. She considered herself fortunate to find teaching positions during the Great Depression, and spent a dozen years as the roving art teacher for five Massachusetts towns (one town per day per week). During WW II, she met a young Navy lieutenant, Bernard Gilbert Platt, O.D., who continued the courtship by mail from his overseas posting. Following their marriage in 1946, she left her beloved Concord for new adventures across the United States and overseas. She brought her creative energies and aesthetic sense to her family, her home and her community, and was a lifelong proponent of education. She retained her friendly smile and mischievous twinkle, her generous and loving heart, and (from a very young age) her aversion to stuffed shirts. She was a voracious reader, avid knitter, enthusiastic and successful grower of African violets and, in her later years, a CNN aficianado. She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Stewart; and daughter, Shelley, both of Richmond; and her loving friends, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Dr. Platt, her husband of 60 years. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Temple Emanuel Cemetery in Roanoke, Va., with Rabbi Kathy Cohen officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Massachusetts College of Art Foundation Inc., 621 Huntington Avenue, Boston, Mass. 02115, Attn: Dorothy Jacobs Platt, 1934 Fund for Art Education.
