Born January 6, 1745 "Parish of St Andrews" London England and died 1789 Pittsburgh PA. Father #74389342 and Mother #74389450.

General William Butler and Colonel James Butler, soldiers of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, for whose family Butler County was named.

The stone and plaque for Col. William and James R Butler says it accurately. (second image on the memorial. First sentence under James. This is accurate. Gen. Richard Butler is the one for whom Butler County, PA, is named. Gen. Richard was Col William's brother and father of James. Recieved from contributor Jean M. W in July 2017.

"Departed this life, on Thursday last, the 16th instant, Colonel William Butler, of this town. His remains were interred the day following, attended by a large number of citizens. He has left a disconsolate widow and five small children to lament the loss of an affectionate husband and tender parent." Pennsylvania Weekly Gazette, Saturday, 16 May 1789, page 3.
