Alaska pioneer Frank Wesley Wince, 90, died Aug. 8, 2008, at his Anchorage home. A family service was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel. A celebration of life and reception were at Lutheran Church of Hope, 1847 W. Northern Lights Blvd.

Frank was born March 18, 1918, in Fairbury, Ill., to Emry and Emma (Wynistorf) Wince. Frank spent his childhood working on the Wince farm. He entered the Army of the United States and was a captain in the infantry. He served in the Battle of the Bulge, the liberation of Paris, and the Korean War, receiving numerous military service awards. Frank graduated from the University of Washington's Civil Engineering School and accepted a job at the Alaska Test Lab in 1957. He met Evelyn Henning while doing contract work for the Federal Aviation Administration and they were married in 1965. Frank was involved in many civil engineering projects throughout his life, including the Anchorage International Airport. He was part-owner of the civil engineering firm Wince, Corthell, Bryson and Associates.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 43 years, Evelyn Wince; brothers, Chet, Robert and Richard; sisters, Alice and Merry Lou; daughter, Penny Harris; son and daughter-in-law, Mitchell and Karen Henning; daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and Leo Brandlen; granddaughters, Darcy Federle and Leslie Tobias; grandson, Michael Korting; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Beau and Amanda Brandlen; granddaughter, BreAnn Brandlen; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Theresa Henning and Jon Robarge; granddaughters, Kelly McCrady, Amy and Emily Felenczak; great-grandson, Matthew Voorhies; great-granddaughters, Carlie and Isabelle Brandlen; great-grandson, Aidan Brandlen; and his beloved teacup poodle, Jack. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James; sister, Pat; and son, Charles. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that Frank's memory be honored with donations to the Hospice of Anchorage and the ASPCA animal shelter. Arrangements were with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
