U.S. Congressman. He was employed in the collection department of the U.S. Internal Revenue, (1812-15), Sheriff of Newport County Rhode Island, (1818-27) and Postmaster of Newport Rhode Island, in 1827. In 1837, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth, Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1847. After his term, he served in the Rhode Island State House of Representatives, (1843-47) and also in the Rhode Island State Senate. He was again elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress, serving (1847-49). After leaving Congress, he was elected the first mayor of Newport Rhode Island, on June 9, 1853 and resigned the same day.
