US Congressman. He was born one of five children (he had a sister and three brothers) to Dr. David King and his wife Anne Gordon King in Newport, Rhode Island, on June 9, 1807. He was educated locally, pursued classical studies, and then studied at the prestigious Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. He also attended and studied at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he graduated in 1825. He then studied law at the Litchfield Law School in Litchfield, Connecticut. Following his education, he was admitted to the bar in 1827, and began his practice of law in both Providence and Newport, Rhode Island. He then became interested in politics and served as a delegate to the Whig National Convention from Rhode Island as a member of the Committee on Permanent Organization in 1839. He also served as a member of the Rhode Island State House of Representatives from 1845 to 1846, Speaker of the Rhode Island State House of Representatives from 1845 to 1846, and as Presidential Elector for Rhode Island in 1848. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A member of the Whig Party, he then served Rhode Island's 1st District (Thirty-First Congress and Thirty-Second Congress) in the House of Representatives from March 4, 1849, to March 3, 1853. He was not a candidate for reelection. After his term in Congress expired, he was succeeded in office by Representative Thomas Davis on March 4, 1853. During that time he married Elizabeth Seaver on January 22, 1851, but sadly both his wife and his newborn daughter, also named Elizabeth, died in 1853. After leaving Congress he resumed his practice of law until his death. He passed away on July 17, 1870, at the age of 63, in Newport, and was buried in Island Cemetery in that city. His newborn daughter Elizabeth passed away on March 13, 1853, at only eight months, and his wife Elizabeth passed away on October 22, 1853, at the age of 27; they are both laid to rest with him. Besides, his father Dr. David King, who was a prominent physician in Rhode Island, his other noted relatives include his brother William Henry King who owned the Kingscote Mansion in Newport, and his other brothers David King Jr., and Edward King, who each made large fortunes as traders by going to China with Russell & Company. His nephew and namesake, George Gordon King, was married to Annie McKenzie Coats, the daughter of Sir James Coats, 1st Baronet and his wife Sarah Ann Auchincloss Coats.
