Rock Musician. He was a member of the musical group "The Lovin' Spoonful", founding the group along with John Sebastian. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1944, he got his first big break in music when he joined the group, "The Mugwumps" in 1964 along with Denny Doherty and "Mama" Cass Elliot. The band broke up in 1965 with Doherty & Elliot joining The Mamas & the Papas and then he joined with "The Lovin' Spoonful" as a guitarist and songwriter that same year. He was known as "the zany one" in the group. They recorded with the record labels, Kama Sutra, Platinum Disc, Rhon, Buddha, Pye, and Pair. After the group broke up in 1968, he went on to a solo career and recorded the hit "As Long As You're Here" and one LP. In later life, he lived in semi-retirement but came out occasionally to play with the likes of John Sebastian and Kris Kristofferson. The Lovin' Spoonful's hits include: "Do You Believe In Magic?," "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice," "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?," "Daydream," "Summer In The City," "Rain On The Roof," "Nashville Cats" and "Six O'Clock." In 2000, Yanovsky was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Lovin' Spoonful. He died at the age of 57 after suffering a heart attack.
