Next to Ben and Cecilia LouisonI know James Roland Coulter lived in Bangor, Maine in the late 1800s, and owned a yacht there named "Leora." He is likely the lodger "Rowland Colter" age 34, electrician, in the 1900 Maine census, with wife of 13 years, Carrie. The 1890 Bangor city directory lists J.R. Coulter, carpenter; & Mrs. Carrie Coulter, clerk. He & Carrie separated and James moved clear across the country to California, where his parents and siblings had already migrated from Pennsylvania.

James married Jennie May "Jean" (Stone) Goodspeed (1868-1945), daughter of Marsena P. Stone & Abbie Elizabeth Ward, and widow of Allen Chipman Goodspeed (1860-1900). Jennie & Allen had one son: Elvin Stanton Goodspeed (1892-1956). James & Jennie had no children.

I questioned whether Jay R. Coulter was my cousin James R. Coulter, until I found his obituary:
COULTER--In San Mateo, Calif., April 20, 1930, Jay Roland Coulter, beloved husband of Jean Goodspeed Coulter, brother of Norman Coulter, Mrs. Inez Dowlin, Mrs. Eva Conlan and Mrs. Milda Bloomer; a native of Pennsylvania.
San Francisco Examiner of 22 April 1930

The cremains of a Jay Coulter who died in 1930 are inurned in the San Francisco Columbarium. This may well be our Jay, since his parents and four of his five siblings are also in this columbarium. Possibly one of his siblings had his body exhumed from San Mateo and cremated so that he could rest near his family members.

Please note the year 1925 should be 1930 in the photo caption.
