When he died, Michael was the oldest member of the Sugar Creek Church. His obituary stated, "He united wih the Church of the Brethren in early life. His seat in church was seldom vacant unless he was prevented by sickness. He labored faithfully in the deacon's office for a number of years, and was loved and respected by all who knew him" (The Gospel Messenger, 25 May 1912, p. 334).
