Ruby Anderson, Died May 15, 2011

Ruby Elizabeth Ornquist was born on Nov. 30, 1920, in Huntly Township, Marshall County, Minnesota, to Nels and Christine (Johnson) Ornquist. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Strathcona, Minnesota. She graduated from high school at Middle River in 1939 and from the Minneapolis School of Business in 1941. After the attack at Pearl Harbor brought the United States into World War II, Ruby applied for a Civil Service appointment in Washington, DC and she started her first government job there in April 1942. In Oct. 1945 Ruby flew to Nuremberg, Germany where she worked for American lawyers who were preparing cases against the German defendants of the war trials. Ruby returned to the United States on June 5, 1946 after a nine-day journey on the ship George Washington and went to work in Omaha, Nebraska. Her next foreign assignment was in 1949 when she was assigned a job at Kokuru, the southern-most island of Japan. While in Japan, she was evacuated when the North Koreans crossed the 38th parallel at the start of the Korean War.

Ruby married Robert L. (Andy) Anderson on Feb. 13, 1945, in Yokohama, Japan. Andy's military career took them to Georgia, Tennessee, Utah and Alabama as well as Europe. Ruby especially enjoyed her visits with family in Sweden and her time in France and Spain. After their marriage ended in 1965, Ruby took a Civil Service job at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia. She made her home there until 1995 when she moved to San Antonio, Texas. Ruby passed away on May 15, 2011, at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 15 days at Southeast Nursing & Rehab in San Antonio.

She is survived by her sister: Evelyn Niemela of Middle River, in addition to many nieces, nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Emil and Adolph; and five sisters: Hildur Aalund, Nettie Hoverud, Marie Mead, Lylvon Larson and Nellie Larson.

She will be remembered as an independent and generous person. Her connections with the family remained very strong and she even made the long trips from San Antonio to attend the weddings of her grand niece in Minneapolis in 2008 and her grand nephew in Woodstock, Illinois in 2009.

Memorial services will be held at 2 P.M. on Mon., June 20, at First Lutheran Church in Middle River with Pastor Curt Matz officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Mon. at the church. Interment will be on the Ornquist family lot in Greenwood Cemetery at Strathcona.
