Frontiersman. One of four famous Cushing brothers of Civil War fame (brothers Alonzo, William, and Howard all gained fame for heroic exploits). He was killed while on a scout in southern Arizona during the "Cochise War." A recent theory of one scholar has him the victim of an intentional ambush led by Nehdni Apache chief "Juh" and his followers in the Whetstone Mountains near present-day Sierra Vista, Arizona. He was perhaps the most famous "indian-fighter" of his time in the Arizona Territory.
