A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Oscar M. and Aurora Bas Esteves. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Zan Marie Waterman Esteves. He was a retired electrical engineer for United Engineers and Bechtel Corporation where he designed nuclear power plants and was a member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers and other professional engineering organizations. Following his 1943 graduation from the University of Puerto Rico, he served as an Army Major in WWII in the South Pacific and the Japan Occupation. An avid outdoorsman, he was an active member of the Sierra Club and the Carolina Mountain Club where he helped lay out and maintain local nature trails.

Survivors include three daughters, Jacquelyn Simpson of Lincoln, NE, Margie Bettencourt of Slidell, LA and Irene Esteves of Boston, MA; three sons, Richard Esteves of Lake Hopatcong, NJ, Edward Esteves of Houston, TX and Robert Esteves of Ann Arbor, MI; a sister, Marta Noa of Arlington, TX and ten grandchildren.
