U.S. Congressman. Moving to New York City in the early 1830s, he served as a city alderman and judge of the city court, (1840-42). In 1843, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth Congress, serving until 1845. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served as the New York City Almshouse Commissioner, in 1846, director of ice companies and commissioner of immigration at the Port of New York. Moving to San Francisco, California, he served a member of the San Francisco City Council, in 1850. Returning to New York City, he served as provost marshal in the Tenth Congressional District of New York, during the Civil War. After the war, he lived in retirement until his death.
