Additional notes regarding the detailed records of the Greeney Family dating in the 1800's can be found under Peter and Mary Greeney notes. At the time of Mary Jane's birth, neither of her parents could read or write and her father, Peter, was considered an "imbecile" because of a head injury he had received in 1865 during the American Civil War.

1880 US Census - Mary Jane Greeney was listed in the US 1880 Census, age five, at the Jefferson County Orphanage, Watertown, NY. Mary Jane was enrolled in school, and as far as I know, she was the first Greeney ever to attend school. None of her brothers and sisters showed up in the record at that time. In the summer of 2008, I visited the Children's Home of Jefferson County and they could not find any records on the Greeney children. As I write my notes, the date is June 21, 2012. It was exactly 135 years ago that she was left at the Orphanage along with her two sisters and her brother George:

Internet Record: Mary Jane Greeney was listed by a unknown source in the www.familysearch.org. files as follows: Mary Jane Greeney, Female Birth: Apr, 1875, Redwood, Jefferson County, New York (Redwood is north of Watertown on Rt. 37.) Death: 06 Aug 1931, Jefferson County, New York, Watertown. She was born in 1875, but not in Redwood. She was born South Crosby, Town Leeds, Ontario, Canada.

In June, 2009, I was in contact with two Great Grandchildren of Mary Jane Greeney Ransier, first with Yvonne Redhead Evans and second with James Potter. The information they both provide was very helpful in continuing on with a time line for Mary Jane Greeney. I was provide with two newspaper articles, the death record of Mary Jane's daughter, Vina K. Ransier Potter and the death record of Mary Jane Greeney Ransier. I was also provided with Mary Jane's husband's name, Andrew T. Ransier.

A Time Line for Mary Jane Greeney

Prior to the birth of Mary Jane, her mother, Polly Burtch Greeney and father, Peter Greeney, were living with Jeremiah Stevens and Mary Cain Burtch Stevens in South Crosby, Town of Leeds, Ontario, Canada. Jeremiah was Polly Greeney's step-brother and Mary Stevens was Polly's first cousin. Peter had been injuried during the last days of the Civil War leaving the family destitute,

5 Apr 1875 - Sarah Jane Greeney (aka Mary Jane Greeney) and her twin sister, Mary Alvetta Greeney, were born. No public records were made at this time. This information was provide by Mary Cain Burtch Stevens, Jeremiah Stevens' wife. Mary Stevens was the first cousin of Polly Greeney, Mother of Sarah Jane and Mary Alvetta. The date this information was provided was in August, 1894.

6 May 1875 - Mary Alvetta Greeney died. For a short period of her life, she was called Mattie, as a pet name. After her sister died, Sarah Jane's name was eventually changes to Mary Jane. No public records were made of Mary Alvetta's death. Information was provide by Mary Stevens.

June 21, 1877 - Mary Jane Greeney surfaced on a Jefferson County Poor House as number 211. She was two years old. That same day, her older bother George S. Greeney and two sisters, Diantha, age 13, and Belle M., age 10 were all sent to the Jefferson County Orphan's House in Watertown, NY. Peter Greeney, along with his wife, Mary Burtch Greeney, Mary Jane's parents, arrive at the Jefferson County Poor House, located in Pamelia, Jefferson County, NY. Pamelia is just north of Watertown, NY. The names and ages of the parents and children are as listed in the NY State records are as follows: Jefferson County Poor House - On Record, NYS Library
Peter Greeny, age 59, born in Canada in 1818
Mary Greeny, age 39, born in New York in 1838
George Smith Greeny, age 15, born in Canada in 1862
Diantha Greeny, age 13, born in New York in 1864
Belle D. Greeny, age 10, born in Canada in 1867
Mary Jane Greeny, age 2, born in Canada in 1875

01 - 02 June 1880 US Federal Census - Wilna, Jefferson County, NY, the name Diana Greeny, age: 15, , birthplace: New York, Occupation: Servant, Marital Status: Single, Father's Birthplace: Canada. Diantha Greeney was living and working for the Michael and Helen Kinney family. After this date, Diantha Greeney is not found in any records. Page 2, Record #301B It is my guess that this girl is Mary Jane's oldest sister. I have not been able to locate Diantha Greeney after this date. In some of the US Census records listing Mary Greeney (Garrett), it shows Peter and Mary as having a total of 8 children, 5 living. I believe that one of children who died was Diantha Greeney.

17 June 1880 U.S. Census, Jefferson County, NY - Town of LeRay: George Greeney, 16 years old, born in Canada, servant for Peter Leyman. Page 18, Record #383B.
June 25 - 26, 1880 US Census, Town of Clayton: David Greeny, 23 years old, born in NY, page 8, Record #242. David was Mary Jane's oldest brother.
June 30, 1880 - September 30, 1882: Mary and Peter are inmates of the Poor House, admitted and discharged from time to time. This information was taken by me from the written booking records of the time. Notes weretaken from record in August, 1978. Peter and his wife were discharged and readmitted on a number of occasions between 1880 and 1882. In fact, Peter was recorded as absconding from the Poor House twice: on September 9, 1881 and on July 25, 1882. That is the last record showing Peter at the Poor House.

Peter and Mary, after leaving the Poor House in the summer of 1882, eventually lived with or near relatives in the Town of Clayton, Jefferson County. These relatives were from the Burtch and LaRose families who lived near Reynolds Corners on Depauville Road. Joseph LaRose and his wife, Lovina Malissa Burtch lived near Reynolds Corners, and so did Joseph LaRose's father and step-mother, Antoine LaRose and Diantha Marie Burtch LaRose. Again, Diantha Burtch was Lewis Burtch's daughter. Diantha was born on Jan. 1, 1840 and her mother was Rachel ?. Mary Polly Burtch was born in 1837. Diantha and Mary were sisters. Diantha was Mary Jane Greeney Ransier's aunt.
Sept. 11, 1886 - Mary Jane was 11 years old and still in the Orphanage when her father, Peter, died near Reynolds Corners. He was 68 years old and he died by drowning. See the article written in a St. Lawrence County newspaper: Gouverneur, NY Press-1883- October-1887-February Wednesday, September 20 - 27, 1886 Article under: Last Column on the Right: Jefferson County News. You can find the record under notes for Peter Greeney.
About 1890 - Mary Burtch Greeney, Peter's widow, began to use the last name of Garrett. Polly was applying for a Government Civil War Pension. Peter served in the Civil War using the name of Peter Garrett, not Peter Greeney. Mary Jane used the name of Garrett as well, because she was entitled to a Civil War pension until the age of 16.

From 1877 to about 1890 - Mary Jane Greeney remained as a resident of the Jefferson County Orphanage and as a student until the late 1880's. Mary Jane turned 15 years old in 1890 and, after leaving the Orphanage, may have resided with her mother. Mary Jane used the last name Garrett from time to time as her mother did.

5 Apr 1890 - At the age of 16, Mary Jane Garrett Greeney married Andrew Thomas Ransier. He was born on 09 Nov 1864 making him 26 years old at the time of their marriage. Andrew Thomas Ransier was a second cousin of Mary Jane. Natural Bridge, NY is where Mary Jane and Andrew were married at the 1st Methodist Church. Andrew T. Ransier was from Croghan, NY. He was born in Canada, according to the marriage record and Mary J. Garrett (Greeney) was from Depauville, NY and born in Canada. Croghan, NY is south of Natural Bridge/Diana Center, NY on Route 812, Indian River Road. Source of Record: Church Record of the 1st Methodist Church of Natural Bridge. This record can be found at the Flower Memorial Library, Watertown, NY.

1892, Feb 16, Diana, Lewis, New York - New York State Census - Andrew and Mary Greeney Ransier along with their first son Edward are recorded in the 1892 Census on the right side of the same page as Andrew's older brother William Ransier and his family. Living with William Ransier is George and Amy Burtch Ransier's youngest son, Enoch. Also recorded on this page is the William and Mary Blanchard family who were their neighbors in the 1880 US Census. The record for Andrew and Mary Ransier is at the bottom of the right page and becomes illegible, but almost certainly lists Andrew's father George Ransier on the final line of the page following Edward Ransier, age 1. The next page is not recorded or not legible on Ancestry.com, so it is impossible to verify Amy Ransier as a member of the household, however there is no reason to believe she is not recorded here with her husband George and her grown sons, William, Andrew, and Enoch. Also listed in the 1892 New York State Census, Diana Lewis, New York on a page or two away from the Ransier's is Mary Jane Greeney Ransier's oldest brother, David L Greeney and his family; wife-Lovina M., son-George W., and daughter-Grace Maud. Since the Ransier's had been living here since about 1872, it seems plausible that after Mary Jane Greeney married Andrew T Ransier in 1890, her brother David was drawn to the area to be nearby. Of course since we don't know how Mary Jane Greeney and Andrew T Ransier met, it is also plausible that David L Greeney's family was living here prior to 1890 and Mary Jane Greeney became involved with Andrew Ransier on a visit to her brother's house in Diana. As has been noted many times, these two familie were intertwined and Mary Jane Greeny's mother, Polly Burtch Greeney was a first cousin of Andrew T Ransier's mother, Amy Burtch Ransier. This note was provided by Jim Potter.

19 Jul 1892 - Edward Francis Ransier was born. Mary Jane and Andrew had their first child. He was born in Natural Bridge, Jefferson County, New York. Mary Jane was 17 years old when Edward was born.

Abt. 1894 - Andrew John Ransier was born. He was the 2nd child of Mary Jane and Andrew Thomas. Mary Jane was about 19 years old at the time and lived in Natural Bridge, NY.

4 Feb 1894 - Lewis Nelson Greeney, Jr. was born to Mary Jane's older brother Lewis Nelson Greeney, Sr. and his wife, Martha Delano Greeney of Natural Bridge, NY. I find this fact to be significant because it means that Mary Jane continued to have close contact with some of her brothers and sisters. Lewis N. Greeney, Jr. was her nephew.

Abt. 1895 - Lovina Elizabeth Ransier, child number 3, was born in Natural Bridge. Mary Jane was about 20 years old. Lovina was named after Mary Jane's sister-in-law, Lovina Stevens, who was married to married to Mary Jane's oldest brother David L. Greeney. Lovina Elizabeth Ransier went by the name of Vina.

1897, April 19 - Natural Bridge, New York - Funeral of Mrs. Ransier. Described in the newspaper account from the Watertown Re-Union of April 28, 1897 as: "The funeral of Mrs. Ransier of Aldrich Settlement, was held in the Blanchard school house April 19. She was an aged lady and leaves several grown-up children." Note: Aldrich Settlement Rd is just south of Diana Center and within 2 miles. There is a Blanchard Cemetery in Diana Center, New York. This "Mrs. Ransier" is almost certainly Amy Burtch Ransier. Her husband George Ransier is recorded 3 years later in the 1900 US Census, as having remarried in 1898.

1896-1897 - At some point, Andrew Thomas Ransier and his wife, Mary Jane move to the Remsen, Oneida County, NY area to live. This is the area where Andrew's parents were living.

05 Jun 1898 - George Dewey Ransier and William Dwight Ransier, twins, were born were born in Remsen, Oneida County, NY. Numbers 4 and 5 children. Mary Jane was about 23 years old at the time the twins were born.

25 Feb 1900 - Helen Mae Ransier was born in Steuben, Oneida County, NY. Number 6 child. Mary Jane was about 25 years old.

1900 US Census - The census record indicates that Mary Jane and Andrew Thomas actually had 7 children before this date with only 6 surviving. Most likely, a child may have been born in the 1896 - 1897 time frame and died at child birth.

Abt. 1902 - Veron Enoch Ransier was born in Steuben, Oneida County, NY. Number 7 child.

04 March 1904 - At the age of 47, David L. Greeney, Mary Jane's oldest brother, died in a bad snow storm not too far from her home in Steuben, NY. Her son, Andrew John, age 10, was with his Uncle David at the time. See notes on David L. Greeney for news article. Mary Jane was about 29 years old.

Abt. 1907 - Harold Theodore Ransier born in Steuben, Oneida County, NY. Number 8 child.

12 Jul 1908 - George Ransier, Andrew T. Ransier's father, dies at St. Vincent DePaul Hospital in Brockville, Ontario, Canada. His usual place of residence on the Death Record is listed as Remsen, NY. He was 69 years old at the time of his death, dying from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was recorded as being single. Information provided by James Potter. George's wife, Amy Burtch, is thought to have died before George.

Abt. 1909 - Louise Estelle Ransier born in Steuben, Oneida County, NY. Number 9 child. Mary Jane was about 34 years old.

April 25, 1910 US Federal Census - Taken in Steuben, Oneida County, NY. Some misinformation, but the census shows all children and parents are living in one household with all ages. Husband, Andrew T. 44 years, Mary J. 35 years, Edward 18 years and so on down to Louise 1 year. It also states that Mary Jane had 12 children of whom 9 survived. This means that Mary Jane and Andrew lost 3 children, one prior to 1900 and two between 1900 and 1910. It would be my guess that these two children died between 1903 and 1906.

From about 1900 through about 1911, Polly Burtch Greeney (Garrett) lived with her daughter Belle LaRose and her husband William LaRose in Clanton, NY and Norwood, St. Lawrence County, NY. Belle and William were married in 1890.

May, 1910 - According to James Potter, Mary Jane's great grandson, Andrew and Mary Jane with all nine children aging from 18 years old to 1 year old, immigrated to the Brockville, Ontario, Canada region from Remsen, NY. They are recorded on an immigration report from Brockville, arriving by ferry from across the St. Lawrence River from Morristown, NY. They declared $100. James Potter's source: Border Crossings: From US to Canada, May, 1910, Andrew Ransier (sic Ransier).

5 Aug 1910 - Vina E. Ransier sent a post card to her Uncle George Greeney who was in Alexandria Bay, NY asking him to pickup his sister, Mary Jane and her (his mother too) mother, Mary Burtch Greeney at the port in Alexandria Bay. Saturday, August 13, 1910 would be the arrival date, by boat from Brockville, Ontario. It's about a 21 mile River excursion between the two points. (see post card as photo)

29 Oct 1910 - Utica Herald-Dispatch newspaper posting reported a Oneida County Tax Sale notice, Andrew T. Ransier property. Neighboring properties includes a John Evans. The property may have been located on Evans Road just off of Starr Hill Road.

01 Mar 1911 - Mary Jane's husband, Andrew Thomas Ransier, died in Brockville, Ontario, Canada at the age of 46 years old. Mary Jane was 36 years old and left with nine children, five under the age of 16 years old. Andrew died at St. Vincent De Paul Hospital at 1 Water Street. following hospitalization of 2 months. The immediate cause of death was pneumonia cause by typhoid fever. He was at first buried in Brockville, Canada and then, on May 24, 1916, was returned to Watertown, NY and buried at the Brookside Cemetery.

09 Jun 1911 - Mary J. Ransier and her 9 children are recorded in the 1911 Census of Canada living at 244 Barthotown in Brockville, Ontario.

Between 1911 and 1914 - Mary Jane and her family moved to Canton, NY.

12 Aug 1914 - The Watertown Daily Times reported the marriage of Miss Vina Elizabeth Ransier of Canton, NY to Floyd Dayton Potter of Watertown. At the time Mary Jane Greeney Ransier was living in Canton, according to the newspaper.

Abt. Oct. 1915 - Andrew John Ransier, Mary Jane's son, dies at the age of 21 and is buried at Brookside Cemetery, Watertown, NY.

Between 1911 and 1923 - Mary Jane Greeney Ransier goes to school and becomes a trained nurse.

Vina was married to Floyd Potter and had two children, Wellington, 4 and Morgan B. 2. Vina was survived by her mother, Mrs. Mary J. Ransier, and seven brothers and sister, Edward, George D., William D., Mrs. Charles (Helen) Goss, Vernon, Harold, and Louise. As has been noted many times, these two familie were intertwined and Mary Jane Greeny's mother, Polly Burtch Greeney was a first cousin of Andrew T Ransier's mother, Amy Burtch Ransier. This note was provided by Jim Potter.
