Ted was born on a farm near Akinsville, Missouri, in Morgan County. He attended grade school and high school at Fortuna, Missouri. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps prior to the United States entering World War II and served from September 28, 1941 to November 15, 1945. He was in the Pacific Theater for 22 months, seeing actions at Saipan and Iwo Jima. He earned two bronze stars and the rank of sergeant.

On June 25, 1947, in California, Missouri, Ted married Lorine Hofstetter, daughter of Stella (Tyree) and Harve Delbert Hofstetter. Lorine was born January 25, 1925, and she survives of the home.

Ted and Lorine moved to the Kansas City area following the war, where they lived for more than 50 years. He graduated from Finley Engineering College and worked his entire professional career at Christianson, Conway and Higgins, a heating and electrical business, in Kansas City, Missouri, retiring as president of the company. He was a member of the Circle of Faith Christian Church in Shawnee, Kansas.

Ted is also survived by one daughter, one grandson, his sister, as well as many cousins, nephews, nieces, and many wonderful friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ercell Hunter Hays, Jr.
