Anthropologist. William H.Gilbert was an American anthropologist who did his PhD fieldwork for the University of Chicago with the North Carolina Cherokees. That resulted in the groundbreaking book, The Eastern Cherokees. His many publications were largely on American Indians, mixed-race Americans, and peoples of India. His article in Social Forces, "Memorandum Concerning the Characteristics of the Larger Mixed-Blood Racial Islands of the Eastern United States," is credited with opening research on tri-racial communities scattered throughout the United States. Many consider him a model of how to do great research. For decades he worked for the Bureau of American Ethnology and the Smithsonian in Washington, DC.
