Jacob was one of seven children born to Johann Ulrich Horrisberger and Elisabeth Susanna Rufer, two of whom did not survive into childhood. The Horrisberger family were from the village of Auswil, near Rohrbach, in the Canton of Bern. His mother was from Lütterkofen, Solothurn, Suisse, further to the west in Switzerland. He and his wife had 14 Kinder, all born in Ohio, it seems.
