U.S. Congressman. Born the younger brother of U.S. Senator Joseph R. Underwood, he graduated from the University of Virginia, in 1829, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 1830. Moving to Texas, in 1834, he was Attorney General for the eastern district of Texas and returned to Kentucky, in 1840. There, he served as a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives, in 1848 and served in the Kentucky State Senate, (1849-53). In 1855, he was elected as an American Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth and Thirty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1859. After his term, he was appointed United States Consul to Glasgow, Scotland, serving (1862-64). After the Civil War was ended, he returned to the United States, practiced law in San Francisco, California, returned to Kentucky, in 1866 and resumed the practice of law until his death from a stroke.
