Born Katherine Fitzpatrick in New York, and placed at the New York Foundling Home as an infant, she was one of over twenty children taken to Clifton, Arizona by the Sisters of Charity. She was originally placed in the home of Cornelio and Margarita Chacon, only to be removed at gunpoint by a posse of Anglo citizens. She was then taken in by Harry and Muriel Wright to be raised.
