Wilbur Cherry was a newspaper reporter and editor in his early years. From 1905 through 1916 he was the General Agent for the Smith Greater Shows. In 1916 he spent a short stint with his brother's show, Devoux & Cherry, before joining the Sol & Rubin Show in 1917. When Solomon sold his share of the show to Rubin Gruberg in February 1917, the name of the show was changed to Rubin & Cherry. Except for a brief hiatus in 1922, Wilbur Cherry served as General Agent of the Rubin & Cherry Shows until his death in 1928. He died after suffering a paralytic stroke while breakfasting with Rubin Gruberg at the Sherman Hotel in Chicago on Dec 1, 1928.

Wilbur Cherry was married to Sarah Haupt Sanford in 1893. They had two daughters, Mildred Louise and Pauline H., and one son, William Norton. Sarah died on January 2, 1909. On January 12, 1915 Wilbur Cherry married Katherine ("Katie") Buice Randle, widow of Charles DuPree Randle. The couple and Katie's minor children lived in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1925 Katie Cherry lists herself as a widow in a Birmingham, Alabama City Directory even though Wilbur Cherry did not die until 1928. On his 1928 death certificate Wilbur Cherry's spouse is listed simply as Rose.
