Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A prominent merchant before the war, he entered the Volunteer Service upon the outbreak of hostilities, and was appointed as a Colonel in the Quartermasters Department. In that capacity, he served as the Chief Quartermaster of the Army of the James first under Major General Benjamin F. Butler, then under Major General Edward O.C. Ord. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on January 15, 1865 for "valuable services in the movement against Fort Fisher". He returned to his business pursuits after the war, and served as the United States Consul in Bremen, Germany from 186 to 1869. When he died in Oakland, California in 1881, his remains were interred in Mountain View Cemetery's Holcombe Vault until removed to Newton, New Jersey five months later.
