Marshall was born to Walter Henry Best and Valencia Ehtel Burrowes in Brooklyn, New York. He had an older brother, Walter who was born exactly nine months before him. The pair were jokingly called "Irish Twins," and looked very much alike.
Though christened James, he was known as Marshall to his family. He served in World War Two as a medic, helping to liberate the concentration camps. He took many wonderful pictures of the countries he served in, unfortunately showing the devestation that the war wrought. But the war changed him - especially after liberating the concentration camps.
Because of the war, he wasn't present for the birth of his first-born daughter, Diana. She was two years old by the time he returned home. A little boy followed in 1947.
Unfortunately, he battled alcoholism his entire life and was not able to overcome his addiction.
He passed away in 1970 due to a heart attack. He left behind his wife and two children - Diana Lynn Best, married to David W. Martin, and James Marshall Best, Sr., who later married Gail Fernedez. He never had a chance to to meet his five grandchildren: David Marshall Martin (15 Dec. 1971), Scott Wesley Martin (19 Apr. 1974), Kelly Lynn Martin (01 Nov. 1976), Katherine Gail Best (14 Aug. 1982), and Elizabeth Anne Best (05 Nov. 1984).
Thank you so much for your service to your country. You were never forgotten.
