Wava Leola Morris, 99, died Dec. 8, 2010, at Fine Pearle Assisted Living. A memorial service was at Anchorage Lutheran Church, 15th Avenue and N Street, with the Rev. David Reinke officiating. A reception followed the service at the church.
Wava was born Aug. 27, 1911, in St. Lawrence, S.D. She came to Alaska in March 1952 and homesteaded near Kashwitna in 1959. Some of her homesteading adventures included strapping on her gun when she went plowing and chasing bear and moose out of her gardens. She was a homemaker most of her life, but she also worked at different jobs, including delivering the mail for the USPS for many years. She taught Sunday school and worked in the church all of her life. She and her husband, Dean, left in 1976 and went to Machias, Wash., where they bought an old farm house that was dilapidated and rebuilt it into their own mansion. While in Machias, she played organ for the Machias Community Church. After her husband died, she came back to Alaska in 2009 to be with her daughter and grandson.
She is survived by her daughter, Leola Froembgen of Anchorage; brother, Harrison Ford of Anacortes, Wash.; sister, Wilma Ashcraft of Snohomish, Wash.; grandson, Jay Froembgen of Anchorage; great-grandsons and great-granddaughter-in-law, Bowen and Amy Meyers of Anchorage, Nathan Meyers of Wasilla, Alex McDowell of Baltimore, Md.; and a great-great-grandson, Mason Meyers of Anchorage who she did not get a chance to see; four step-daughters, Martha, Jackie, Claudia and Shirley; and her special Alaska family, which she was very close to.
